Release J

Postby monk.e.boy » Wed Apr 22, 2009 7:39 pm

Hi,

Been busy - 3 month old baby and very stressed at work :(

I am writing the PHP and tutorials for the next release. Not much has changed:

- better X axis
- better Y axis
- chart animations

Am about 1/3 to 1/2 way through the tutorials.

I will finish them and release, then I will take a good look at dz_s branch and look at merging as much as I can :)

If anyone wants to help, a small patch + a test file for each option/new feature in the patch is very helpful! It is hard work trying to reverse engineer all the options and how they work together sometimes :)

Hi M.E.B,
Here is kind of a shopping list for my patches when you are ready to look at them. If you let me know during the week what you are interested in, I can probably generate a patch over the weekend for one or two of them against whatever is in the repository at the time.
Keep up the good work,
DZ

dz_ my next plan is to just apply a bunch of your patches. I am going to resist making any changes until I have done that :)

You have done **way** too much cool stuff :) lol, I (we all) really appreciate all the work you have put into this project.

I am also going to try to release more often, so I may apply one or two then release, etc...

Cool.

P.S. Microsoft and IE have just committed to the HTML5 spec, this means IE will finally have canvas support. What are your thoughts on moving from Flash to canvas?

Thanks for all the hard work, I'm looking forward to finally merging DZ_ patches with the offical release. Right now I'm deciding per chart which swf to use to get the most dramatic effect (especially the toggle-visibility) and horizontal stack bars.

Is it too late to lobby for the 'K' release name? I'd vote for "Kvasir" for all the inspiration and knowledge this project represents.

I think this means IE9 will have canvas support - I'm unsure what HTML5 support would mean for the all the users still using IE6 or IE7 or even those who have now migrated to IE8 (as the support is broken).... perhaps a move to canvas would be a good thing as long as you are prepared to have average looking graphs or reduced features on IE for a while yet longer.

I'm not sure what to do, I don't like flash very much. It is way too hard to debug (I am used to a debugger that works) and it is closed source plugin... but canvas don't work that well in IE.... bah.

OK, I'll put a little more effort into the next set of bug fixes so they constitute a new release - yay for K

Keep in mind that it isn't really possible to shift to Canvas based on IE support for another 5 or so years. It takes SOOOO long for users to upgrade. Most users are STILL using IE6 and it has been statistically proven that the majority that have upgraded from IE7 to IE8 are technically inclined individuals who actually have the smarts to see that IE6 & 7 are steaming piles of $*!%.

Canvas is fantastic, and I believe you can really get some cool charts happening with it. But I believe now is not the right time.
